Team of Indian startup Ringing Bells did not expect that their project of super-cheap smartphone with name Freedom 251 would attract so much attention. In February company presented device of entry level with 4-inch screen, 4-core chipset and record low price of 251 rupees (now it is $4). Producer affirms that first deliveries will start already on 30 June. Company plans to produce 200 thousand of devices in all.
Freedom 251 was produced with the support of Indian government, therefore it has so low price. By the moment of announcement, smartphone has not been ready. That is why startup bought identical devices of Adcom brand for $50 per device for the demonstration. For the present, Ringing Bells works with losses. However, producer expects to get profit due to economy of scale (and also due to governmental subsidies).
