With a barrage of smartphone makers jumping into this ever-so competitive yet lucrative budget smartphone market, Micromax is once again at the helm of making history with the launch of its new smartphone in the YU range with YU Yunique. What makes this smartphone unique enough is the specs it offers at the price it comes at. But with this price-specs trade-off becoming a thing too common to woo customers to buy phones, even in this budget smartphone category, Micromax promises to offer a phone that’s build to offer more that what a smartphone of this range is expected to. That being said, it’s going to be no walk in the park for Micromax with Xiaomi Redmi 2 already an established smartphone in this segment to compete with. Also, with both of these smartphones being placed in the same price bracket, the competition couldn’t have been stiffer. Thus, in order to help you find the best buy in this budget smartphone market, we bring you the most detailed review, comparing the Micromax YU Yunique vs Xiaomi Redmi 2 to find out the best of the lot. Micromax YU Yunique vs Xiaomi Redmi 2 : Detailed Comparison

Look, Design and Feel

Micromax YU Yunique : 8.3mm thick, weighs 128g

Xiaomi Redmi 2 : 9.4mm thick, weighs 133g

Micromax seems to have settled for the design it first unveiled with its Yu Yureka phone with a Saturn-Ring around the camera lens, incooperating a LED flash with a plush smooth back cover. The phone feels nice and sturdy in hand, thanks to its apt screen size and body proportions. Along with all of this comes an additional option to check-out with 2 additional back-covers for an additional cost of Rs. 500. Coming to Redmi 2, the uninspiring Redmi design language carries forward to this incremental upgrade from Xiaomi giving the same lackluster feel. A bulky body & a slippery cheap plasticky back cover makes it pretty evident that the phone is build to a cost.

Xiaomi Redmi 2 : 4.7 inches, 720 x 1280 Pixels, 312 ppi

With both the smartphones sharing same set of specs in the display segment, it really comes down to the under-the-sun screen legibility and viewing angles. While the Micromax YU Yunique features a IPS Panel display, Redmi 2 comes with a LCD display. On being compared side-to-side, YU Yunique offers better screen protection with a Corning Glass 3 protection as compared to Corning Glass 2 on Redmi 2 but the LCD panel on Redmi 2 seems to fare through better with more vibrant, accurate color reproduction and better sunlight legibility.

Winner : Xiaomi Redmi 2

Processor and Performance

Micromax YU Yunique : 1.2 GHz Quad Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 Processor with 1GB RAM

Xiaomi Redmi 2 : 1.2 GHz Quad Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 Processor with 1GB RAM

As has the case been, again, the same set of hardware makes way on both of these budget smartphones. With more of the Real-world performance becoming a by-product of how the software and the hardware of a phone interface with each other, Micromax YU Yunique tends to offer a better put-together unit with its stock Android taking less toll on the hardware as compared to the MIUI on the Xiaomi’s Redmi 2. Our only problem with the Micromax YU Yunique is the sudden stuttering of the device in between app switching, specially once you tend to multi-task on the phone.

Winner : Xiaomi Redmi 2

Operating System/Software

Micromax YU Yunique : Android 5.1 – Lollipop (option to flash Cyanogen OS 12.1)

Xiaomi Redmi 2 : Android 4.4.4 – KitKat with MIUI

With the first ever phone from Micromax featuring Stock Android out-of-the-box, the hardware is set free of the excessive bloatware that comes loaded with the modified UI’s such as MIUI. While the stock Android usually offers better stability and simplicity of usability, it is the hardware that lets the stock Android on YU Yunique down as the phone’s OS starts to offer frequent hiccups and instability once you start multitasking, thus taking a toll on the overall user experience. This is where the MIUI fares better with incremental updates offered to its OS cycle from time to time, bringing in a plethora of new features and developments. With an optional feature to flash Cyanogen OS 12.1 on YU Yunique, Micromax has left it to the user to choose from the array of customization options or the stock Android free of all of this bloatware.

Winner : Xiaomi Redmi 2

Micromax YU Yunique : 8 MP real-camera with LED flash, 2 MP front-facing camera

Xiaomi Redmi 2 : 8 MP real-camera with LED flash, 2 MP front-facing camera

With similar set of specs, as has been the case so far, both the phones compete more on the strength of their OS’ so as to contemplate pictures in close tandem with the hardware to produce the best results. Xiaomi’s Redmi 2 offers better customization option within its camera app as compared to the YU Yunique whose camera app is marred with a cluttered array of modes and features that covers nearly half the display in one long overflow menu. In general, both the phones otherwise churn out decent day-light pictures with a disappointing low-light photography, even with flash/HDR turned on.

Winner : Xiaomi Redmi 2

Battery life

Micromax YU Yunique : 2000 mAh, Li-po (Non-removable)

Xiaomi Redmi 2 : 2200 mAh, Li-po

Micromax YU Yunique vs Xiaomi Redmi 2 (2)

Micromax YU Yunique comes with a unique non-removable battery that comes loaded under a removable back cover. The company aims to provide removable back covers so as to give its users an option to swap between various color options it is offering on the back cover, keeping the battery non-removable. Also, with a light set of hardware specifications to take their toll on the battery on both these smartphones, the Micromax YU Yunique offers longer standby time than its competitor and also fare through easily for 12-14 hours at full charge with low-medium usage.

Micromax YU Yunique vs Xiaomi Redmi 2 – Verdict

First things first, while both of these smartphone are no spec-mongers, they do come with some breakthrough specifications for the price they are offered for, but a smartphone that’s build to a price shouldn’t be expected to fare through flawlessly in every segment we may judge other higher-end smartphones on. Never-the-less, both of these phones bring to table some amazing features like Corning glass 3, HD displays & Qualcomm processors that are more so expected to feature on costlier handsets. On being compared side-to-side, Xiaomi’s Redmi 2 makes up for a well put together unit than its competitor minus a good build and design. YU Yunique is by no margins a walkover, specially it being the first smartphone from Micromax to run stock Android out-of-the-box, but it tends to lack on some critical areas such as its lackluster approach to multitasking and its clustered camera app. So then, for all those who are looking for a decent day-to-day performer minus a design that would make you fall in love with it, Xiaomi Redmi 2 is the clear winner here. For all those who are buying their first smartphone with a fixed budget in prospect and do not offer to spend some extra bucks for Redmi 2, YU Yunique is sure to get all your tasks done easily.

(P.S. : For all those who further want to add some metal to the already flawless Xiaomi Redmi 2, also known as Xiaomi Redmi 2A, you can choose to spend extra 1000 bucks for an upgraded 2GB of RAM rather than 1GB of RAM as that on Xiaomi Redmi 2.)
